LOCAL SPORTS March 24, 2020
The sports world is currently halted pretty much world wide with the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic.
With that in mind, your local sports director has come up with a two week series of the Top 10 sports events to watch on TV. This is my own personal list. Your list would certainly look different but I’m sure there are a few common events we would share. Depending on your age, you may have never seen these before but for most people, they will bring back some great memories and a smile. Smiles are much needed in these trying times!
June 9, 1973: Secretariat wins the triple crown of Horse Racing with a 31 length victory at the Belmont Stakes in New York. Again, you can catch this epic moment on you tube videos.
“Big Red” became the first horse in 25 years to win the triple crown with the win but it was the way he did it that is the stuff on legend.
Secretariat had already won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in record setting times, then roasted a small field (five horses total) in the Belmont, an astounding 31 lengths ahead of the second place horse. His time of 2:24:00 is still two seconds faster than any other horse. Secretariat holds the record to this day as well in the Derby and Preakness.
Secretariat’s story was made into a movie released by Disney in 2010 that made over $60 million worldwide. It was one of the few movies I have ever seen in a Theatre twice.
An ESPN documentary ranked Secretariat #35 on the list of the Top 100 athletes of the 20th Century, the only non-human on the list.
